Mike Hurley was born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland and came to Canada in 1983 at the age of 25. He moved to Burnaby in 1988. 

 

Before entering politics, Mike spent 30 years working for the Burnaby Fire Department and served as the head of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. In recognition of his substantial contributions to public life and charitable causes, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and the Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022.

 

Concerned about long-time Burnaby residents losing their homes due to demovictions, Mike ran for mayor in 2018 and won. He then implemented the strongest renter protections in North America and pushed for the construction of new rental housing. In 2022, he was re-elected as mayor by acclamation and continued his work creating a brighter future for all Burnaby residents.

 

How Mike Supports Young People:

 

• Housing. Under Mike’s leadership, more than 25,000 new homes – including 19,000 new rental apartments – have been built in Burnaby or are in development. He also created the Burnaby Housing Authority to help build purpose-built below-market and rental housing.

• Renter Protections. Mike ended demovictions in Burnaby and brought in the strongest renter protections in North America.

• Community Centres. Mike is building three new community centres in Burnaby that will provide young people with more spaces to exercise, play sports, learn new skills and socialize.  

​

• Jobs. Mike plans to create the Burnaby Innovation District to attract high-tech industries and good jobs to the city.

​

• Responsible Fiscal Management. Mike takes a balanced approach to managing the city’s finances – making sustainable investments in community amenities while keeping the city debt free. This ensures that future generations will not be saddled with debt from previous generations.
