Shelley Desautels: Candidate for Salmon Arm Council

I’ve called Salmon Arm home for 12 years with my husband and our two children (19 & 22). Over that time, I’ve worked, built businesses, and served the community through a variety of volunteer roles. I run my own mapping & analysis business working closely with community forests, woodlots, and First Nations to support their operational mapping needs and data support for their government requirements.  I also teach mapping and data analysis at Okanagan College through their GIS Certificate program.  I have also helped my husband start and grow his boxing gym by providing administrative, marketing, and event planning support.

Over the years, I have served on several local boards including Community Futures and the Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce.  I later became Executive Director of the Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce, which provided a better understanding of issues that local businesses may face.  I have also served as the Service Office at the Royal Canadian Legion, both in Salmon Arm and currently in Armstrong.  In this role I have helped support veterans with their disability claims, and supporting veterans in need with available poppy funds.

I’m running for Salmon Arm City Council because I believe who sits at the table matters. We need councillors who are connected to the community, bring different experiences and perspectives, and are prepared to work together to make thoughtful decisions about how our city grows and changes.

I work with young people through both education and recreation, and I see firsthand how important it is for youth to have places to go, things to do and opportunities to feel connected to their community.

If elected, I:

Want to make sure youth are included in conversations and decisions that affect them.

Will support recreation, safe and welcoming public spaces, active transportation, and opportunities for youth to participate and belong.

Will support diversity and want young people from all backgrounds to feel welcome in our community.

Want to encourage youth to learn about local government, elections, and how they can participate in civic life.

Want to hear directly from youth and recognize their voices as an important part of community decision-making.
