Jonah Timms: Candidate for Lillooet Council

My name is Jonah Timms and I am running for councillor in the District of Lillooet. I’m running because I believe that Lillooet’s best years are ahead of it and I believe that we need leaders who will listen, make tough decisions, and keep the future and our youth at the centre of decisions. I believe that the best way to make positive change is to have young people at the table offering alternative views than those typically on Council.
As a husband and father of three young children, the needs and well-being of youth, young families, and future generations will be central to the decisions that I make. I know that good governance and leadership is about more than reacting to the issues of the day. Good governance and effective leadership are about tackling the issues of the day while making long-term decisions for the benefits of all citizens.
I want Lillooet to continue to be an amazing community for young people to grow up, raise a family, establish themselves, and where they can ultimately retire and continue to live a meaningful life. That future can’t happen without long-term planning and thinking about how to make Lillooet more inclusive, sustainable, walk-able, and vibrant. We need young people at the table to do that.
As Councillor, I will support youth by:
-
Giving them a voice at the table by establishing a Junior Councillor position;
-
Advocating for more, and affordable, housing;
-
Allocating funds for more trails, green spaces, and side walks decreasing our dependence on private vehicles;
-
Creating more spaces for youth to recreate such as building a new dog park and water park;
-
Supporting a local economy that provides them opportunities through varied employment in agriculture, industry, and in leadership positions;
-
Advocating for transit options for our region; and
-
Planning for the community that youth will live in for years by updating our Water Master Plan and creating a Community and Corporate Energy and Emissions Plan
